Local Movers in Providence for Apartments, Triple-Deckers and Houses
Providence Premier Movers moves Rhode Island homes, from third-floor walk-ups in Elmhurst to four-bedroom colonials on the East Side. We do the local moving, the packing, storage when your dates don't meet, and the heavy things people worry about, like pianos and safes. Pad, wrap, strap: every piece of furniture gets moving blankets and shrink wrap before it leaves the room, and the floors get runners before the first box moves.
Our crews have more than 10,000 moves behind them. We work seven days a week, put the price in writing within 48 hours, and send your building the certificate of insurance it wants before anyone touches the elevator. Two movers and a truck cost $165 an hour. Most families are surprised how much faster three movers go on stairs, and we'll tell you honestly which crew size your move needs.

Residential Moving Services in Providence, RI
Homes are most of our week. Here's what each kind of move usually takes, and what comes off the truck for it.
Apartment Movers
Studios, one and two-bedroom flats, walk-ups over a corner store. We send two or three movers with a 20 ft truck and lay floor runners down the hall. Our one-bedroom moves inside Providence mostly wrap up in 3 to 4 hours. More on apartment moving.
Triple-Decker Moves
Third floor, back stairs, a turn at every landing. A triple-decker back staircase is a ship's ladder with a landlord's paint job, so we pad the banister, take the legs off tables and carry in pairs. Budget about one extra hour over a first-floor flat.
House Movers
Three and four-bedroom houses get a crew of three or four and a 26 ft box truck. Heavy pieces go in first and each tier gets strapped, so nothing slides when the truck climbs Angell Street. Nothing scraped.
Condo and Loft Moves
Downtown towers and Olneyville mill lofts run on elevator bookings and paperwork. We send the certificate of insurance to your building manager a day or two early and time the load to the dock hours, so nobody waits in the lobby with a dresser.
Packing Services
All of it, only the kitchen, or just the wedding china. Plates get wrapped in kraft paper and newsprint and go into a dish pack. Clothes ride in a wardrobe carton, still on their hangers. Our packers do a 2-bedroom kitchen in about 3 hours. See packing services.
Moving and Storage
Closing dates rarely line up. We load once into a sealed storage vault in climate-controlled storage, and it comes out on the day you get the keys. Our vaults run $95 to $150 a month. See moving and storage.
Furniture Movers
One sofa, one dresser off a yard sale, or a room you want flipped around. Doorway first: we measure, then bring the four-wheel dolly and pads, and take a door off its hinges if that's what it takes. See furniture moving.
Piano Movers
An upright weighs 300 to 800 pounds and a grand up to 1,200. A piano on stairs is a dead lift on a slope, so ours ride strapped to a padded piano board with 3 movers on the stairs. See piano moving.
Long Distance Movers
Providence to Massachusetts or Connecticut, with a binding estimate and a written inventory list. Interstate movers need a USDOT number; we'll show you how to look one up and walk you through every form before you sign. See long distance moving.

Commercial Movers for Providence Offices and Shops
Homes fill most of our week, but we move small businesses too, mostly evenings and weekends so you open on time.
Office Movers
Desks, files, monitors and conference tables, every piece tagged by room so it lands where the floor plan says. We've moved 12-desk offices on a Saturday and had them working Monday at 8. See office moving.
Retail and Restaurant Moves
Shelving, display cases and dining furniture, moved after closing so the doors open on time the next day.
Medical and Dental Offices
Waiting room furniture, files and front desks. Equipment that needs a technician gets disconnected by your vendor first; we move it once it's ready.
Property Managers and Landlords
Unit turnovers, furniture swaps and short storage for apartment buildings and triple-decker owners. Our crews send a certificate of insurance for every building, every time.
The Providence Premier Movers Process
The same five steps whether it's a studio or a farmhouse.
Walk-through
Dan or a crew lead looks at your place, in person or on a video call. Doorway first: we count floors, turns and the big pieces before anyone says a number.
Written quote
Within 48 hours you get the crew size, the hourly rate and a time range in writing. Honestly, if a mover won't look before quoting a house, they're guessing.
Prep
We book the city parking signs or the freight elevator and drop off boxes if you're packing yourself.
Moving day
Runners down, door jambs padded, furniture wrapped. The truck gets loaded like a cooler for a day at Narragansett: heavy on the bottom, soft things on top, nothing rattling.
Set-up
Beds go back together and furniture lands where you point. Keys back by dark.

Moving and Storage When Your Dates Don't Line Up
Providence leases end on the last day of the month and closings slip all the time. Storage between closings works like a coat check: we load once, you get the inventory list, and it all comes back the way it went in when the new place is ready.

Some things need more than a dolly and a strong back. These are the items we plan for separately.
Piano and Organ Moving
Spinets, uprights, baby grands and organs on a piano board, with three movers for any stairs.
Antique and Heirloom Furniture
Old finishes scratch if you look at them wrong. We pad twice and keep shrink wrap off bare wood, since plastic can trap moisture against it.
Appliance Moving
Fridges, washers and dryers on an appliance hand truck that climbs stairs one step at a time.
Gun Safe Moving
Safes up to about 600 pounds on ground floors and short stair runs. Tell us the model and weight when you call.
Pinball and Arcade Machines
Legs off, glass out and boxed in a mirror carton, cabinet on its back on the dolly. Yes, we've moved a few.
Last-Minute Moves
Lease fell through on Thursday? Call anyway. When one of our crews has a gap this week, we'll fill it with your move.
Things to Know Before Moving in Providence
Book a No Parking Permit for the Truck
Providence posts temporary no parking signs if you apply about two business days ahead, for $80 plus meter charges. Rent the sign. It beats carrying a sofa a block and a half down a College Hill one-way.
Avoid the Student Turnover Weeks
Moving on September 1 in Providence is like trying to get a table on Atwells Avenue at 7 on a Saturday. Student turnover at Brown, RISD, PC and Johnson & Wales fills late May, early June and the last week of August. Book three or four weeks ahead, or move midweek.
Ask What Coverage You Actually Have
Basic coverage pays 60 cents per pound per item, so a 30-pound TV is worth $18. In our opinion that's a receipt, not insurance. Ask about Full Value Protection for anything you'd miss.
Check Who You Are Hiring
Moving companies in RI that work inside the state are licensed by the RI Division of Public Utilities and Carriers, which also approves each company's tariff, so the hourly rate can't change on the day. Interstate movers need a USDOT number you can check on the FMCSA site.
Plan Around I-95 and I-195
I-95 and I-195 crawl through downtown every weekday from 4 to 6 pm. We plan the drive between houses so your crew isn't sitting in traffic on your clock.

Insured & Accountable

The Owner
“We'd rather carry a sofa down three flights twice than scratch one banister. Padding a room costs us ten minutes. Fixing a gouged door frame costs you a weekend.”
Dan Medeiros
Owner, Providence Premier MoversDan grew up a few streets off Wickenden in Fox Point and started carrying boxes on a moving crew the summer he turned nineteen. He ran crews for more than twenty years before running the company, and he still does a lot of the walk-throughs himself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving in Providence
How much do movers cost in Providence, RI?
Local movers in Providence charge about $165 an hour for two movers and a truck and $215 an hour for three in 2026, with a three-hour minimum. A one-bedroom apartment usually costs $480 to $760 and a three-bedroom house $1,350 to $2,300, depending on stairs and packing.
How far ahead should I book movers in Providence?
Book about two weeks ahead for most dates and three to four weeks ahead for the end of May, early June and the last week of August, when student leases turn over. We also take last-minute moves when a crew is free, so it's worth calling even on short notice.
Do you move on weekends?
Yes. We move seven days a week, holidays by arrangement. Weekends go first in spring and summer, so a weekday slot is easier to get, and honestly it moves faster too: quieter roads and empty elevators. We move in rain and snow as well, with extra floor runners down.
Is my furniture covered if something breaks?
Every move includes basic Released Value Protection at 60 cents per pound per item, which is what federal rules require for interstate moves. That pays very little for light, valuable things, so ask us about Full Value Protection for anything you would hate to lose.
Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes. Uprights and grands go on a padded piano board, strapped, with three movers on the stairs. A local upright move usually costs $325 to $575. Tell us the number of steps and any turns when you call, so we bring the right crew and equipment.
Do I need a parking permit for the moving truck?
On narrow Providence streets it helps. The city posts temporary no parking signs if you apply about two business days ahead, for an $80 fee plus meter charges. Without one, the crew may carry everything from down the block, which adds time to an hourly move.
Do you move people out of state?
Yes, to Massachusetts and Connecticut. A two-bedroom move from Providence to the Boston area usually costs $1,900 to $3,200. Interstate moves come with a written estimate, an inventory list and a bill of lading. Longer moves are quoted case by case.
Do you sell boxes and packing supplies?
Yes. We sell dish packs, wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, book boxes, packing paper, tape and mattress bags, and we'll drop them off a week before. If you'd rather not pack at all, our crew can pack the whole house or just the kitchen.
